Shakespeare Workshop for Actors in New York City

New Perspectives Intensive Shakespeare Bootcamp

Study with award-winning director & innovative Shakespeare Educator Melody Brooks

New Perspectives has received critical and popular acclaim for its innovative Shakespeare productions for the past 16 years, and has developed a distinctive performance approach that is notable for immediacy of action and accessibility to audiences of all ages and from all backgrounds. By popular demand, we are offering a 4-week workshop program for performers at all levels—from beginners to long-time professionals who want to conquer their fear of Shakespeare or strengthen their skills and audition repertoire. Conducted by NPTC’s founder and artistic director, Melody Brooks, the program takes place on consecutive Fridays. Specific dates and times TBD.

SESSION 1: It’s All in the Text!

A review of what participants know about basic text analysis methods (i.e., iambic pentameter, scansion, irregular verse) and learning how to “Sight-Read Shakespeare” by working with the First Folio. Bring your favorite monologue!

SESSION 2: The Heart of the Matter

Learn how to use historical research and source material—plus your own understanding of human behavior to unearth multiple layers of meaning in these plays and create 3-dimensional characters on stage.  Don’t just rely on the “experts”!

SESSION 3: What’s in a Word?

Participants are paired in scenes to dig deeply into the text and discover multiple possibilities for interpretation and performance.  Each scene is analyzed using historical context, First Folio and “Cue Script” clues.

SESSION 4: Putting it All Together

Participants showcase their scenes and receive specific feedback in relation to the various elements covered in the workshop.

Resource materials and text copies provided.
